The Ministry of Health and Welfare’s 2022 Annual Cause of Death Statistics revealed an alarming statistic: an average of one cardiovascular-related death occurs every 22 minutes. In light of this concerning data, the Health Promotion Administration stresses the significance of readiness for significant temperature swings during this transitional period. It urges the public to bolster measures to fend off the cold and maintain warmth. Particularly, individuals with cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, a family history of stroke or coronary heart disease, and elderly family members are urged to exercise heightened caution and care. The Health Promotion Administration has provided the following tips to stay warm and protect your health during cold weather:

I. DOs:

1. Maintain a balanced diet: Opt for foods that are low in oil, sugar, and salt, yet high in fiber.

2. Maintain regular exercise: Accumulate at least 150 minutes of exercise per week for adults.

3. Ensure adequate sleep: Adults should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per day.

II. DON’Ts:

1. Avoid smoking and excessive drinking: Smoking raises blood pressure and cholesterol levels, adversely affecting cardiovascular health. Consider substituting alcohol with tea or water for a healthier lifestyle.

2. Maintain a healthy waistline: Obesity is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. It is recommended that men keep their waist circumference below 90 cm (approximately 35 inches) and women below 80 cm (approximately 31 inches).

3. Preventing the Three Highs (hypertension, high blood sugar, high cholestrol): Keep blood pressure below 140/90 mmHg, fasting blood glucose levels below 126 mg/dl, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol below 160 mg/dl.

The Health Promotion Administration reminds that early-stage symptoms of the Three Highs are often subtle, making it challenging for individuals to detect potential health risks. It is advisable to follow the "722" principle: measure blood pressure continuously for "7" days, once in the morning after waking up, and once at night before going to bed, totaling "2" measurements per day, with each measurement taken twice to calculate the average value. In case of suspected symptoms of stroke or myocardial infarction (heart attack), promptly dial 119 and seek medical attention to save lives and minimize potential health complications.
