During the winter and spring seasons, Taiwan encounters its peak foggy weather conditions, characterized by dense fog drifting with the air currents. This weather phenomenon has the potential to greatly reduce visibility, increasing the risk of accidents if driving without caution. The Freeway Bureau advises all road users to exercise heightened caution when navigating the highways in dense fog, prioritizing safety for both themselves and others.

1. Reduce speed and increase appropriate following distance: When driving into a foggy area with reduced visibility, gradually slow down, increase the distance between your vehicle and the one in front, and constantly be aware of the surrounding traffic. In case of severely limited visibility, it is recommended to drive towards the nearest service area, stop, and wait for the fog to dissipate, or exit the highway at the nearest interchange.

2. Proper use of lights: Turn on the headlights, along with both front and rear fog lights, to enhance the visibility of your vehicle to others. Nonetheless, refrain from using high beams, as their light can be dispersed by fog, creating a blinding white glare that hampers visibility of the road conditions.

3. Minimize frequent lane changes and sudden stops: In non-emergency situations, try to avoid changing lanes, abruptly braking, or halting the vehicle on the roadway to prevent potential collisions caused by delayed reactions from nearby vehicles.

4. In case of an emergency requiring the vehicle to stop: Please try to coast the vehicle to the roadside or a curve, activate the hazard warning lights, and place a breakdown sign (warning triangles) 50–100 meters behind the vehicle. After ensuring safety, occupants should promptly exit the vehicle, move to the outside of the guardrail or another safe location, and utilize the 1968 App’s law enforcement reporting function or call 1968 for assistance.

To obtain real-time weather information along the national freeways, the Directorate General of Highways has collaborated with the Central Weather Bureau to install a total of 79 automatic weather stations along the highway routes. When the fog detector detects visibility on a specific road section dropping below 400 meters, the Dense Fog warning message will be displayed on the Changeable Message Sign (CMS). Additionally, if users activate the “Custom Push/LBS/Weather Notification Message” function on the 1968 App, immediate alerts will be sent, providing road users with valuable information that they can utilize.
