1. The global African swine fever situation remains critical. With recent outbreaks in Mainland China causing a continuous drop in pork prices, exacerbated by increased year-end demand for livestock products, there’s a rising trend in penalties for travelers illegally carrying animal products into Taiwan.

2. To avoid the spread of African swine fever during the Lunar New Year rush and associated gift-giving traditions, it’s imperative to raise awareness among inbound migrant workers to Taiwan, foreign spouses, foreign individuals, and international students, and to follow the guidelines listed below:

(1) Do not bring meat products or other animal-related items upon entry. If mistakenly carried, dispose of them in designated disposal bins or declare and discard them at customs before entry.

(2) Those found carrying pork products from countries (or regions) affected by African swine fever within the past three years shall be subject to penalties. A fine of NT$200,000 shall be imposed on the first offense, and NT$1,000,000 for subsequent offenses. Violators who are not residents of Taiwan and unable to pay the fine on the spot will be referred by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture to the National Immigration Agency of the Ministry of the Interior, which may deny entry by the violator.

(3) Inform relatives and friends abroad not to send meat products or quarantine-restricted items to Taiwan via courier or mail. If pork products from African swine fever-affected countries are sent by mail and confirmed upon inspection, the recipient shall face a fine of NT$200,000 for the first offense and NT$1,000,000 for subsequent offenses.

3. You can download and use promotional materials related to African swine fever prevention from the African Swine Fever Information Zone at the official website of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency (https://asf.aphia.gov.tw/ws.php?id=17894). Additionally, the “Quarantine Regulations for Commonly Carried Plants, Animals, or Their Products by Incoming Travelers” can be accessed and downloaded for reference from (https://www.aphia.gov.tw/ws.php?id=10719).
