The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (henceforth referred to as the “CDC”) declares the beginning of the second phase of the government-funded influenza vaccine! The individuals targeted for the second phase are adults aged 50 to 64, who do not have any chronic illnesses that pose a high risk. To improve the rate of influenza vaccine administration, the CDC has renewed its partnership with Chuan Lian Enterprise Co., Ltd. (PXmart), as well as the county and city departments of health to establish multiple inoculation stations at the designated PXmart locations. These stations will assist in the administration of the vaccine to the general public.

The CDC has prepared 6.98 million doses of influenza vaccine funded by the government for distribution to the eligible general public. Today, the second phase became accessible to the targets. Individuals between the ages of 50 and 64, who do not have high-risk chronic conditions, are permitted to visit the stations in order to receive the influenza vaccine and bolster their own immunity. As of the 30th of October, a total of 3.8 million individuals have received the influenza vaccine. Subsequently, on October 11, the Omicron XBB.1.5 vaccine was made available for the public. In the post-pandemic period, the general public is advised to avail of both influenza and COVID-19 (1+1) vaccines in order to maintain dual protection. Furthermore, seniors who are 65 years of age or older may be eligible to receive the pneumococcal vaccine at various phases, contingent on their eligibility. This will significantly mitigate the occurrence of respiratory diseases that result in critical illnesses and mortality.

The CDC reports that the government-funded influenza vaccine for this year is administered in two phases. The second phase commenced on November 1st. Individuals between the ages of 50 and 64, who do not have high-risk chronic illnesses, qualify for inoculation funded by the government. Preventing influenza with the influenza vaccine is the most effective method. Inoculation can increase the protective power from 30% to 80%. On average, the protective power against hospitalization due to influenza is approximately 41%, while the protective power against critical illness reaches 82%.

Additionally, the CDC advises that that there are approximately 4,000 inoculation contract medical institutions in Taiwan. The general public may locate contract medical institutions in their vicinity by utilizing the websites of the local government health departments, Taiwan V-Watch, https://antiflu.cdc.gov.tw/, or the 1922 Pandemic Prevention Inquiry Hotline. Subsequently, they may schedule a telephone appointment at a medical institution in order to receive vaccinations without the inconvenience of waiting in line. It is necessary to bring the NHI card along with any relevant documentation (e.g., the Pregnant Women Handbook, the Children Health Handbook, etc.) when seeking vaccination. It is essential to observe proper hand hygiene, wear a face mask and maintain an appropriate social distance.
