The October Mobile Phone Recycling Special Bonus Activity is launching with double the convenience! You can now recycle your old phone and take home an iPhone 15 as a special bonus.

The month for recycling mobile phones has returned! The mobile phone recycling month begins on October 1, 2023, and ends on October 31, 2023. The general public who complete recycling steps at designated locations and register raffle drawing information may not only receive a bonus preferential offer via channels, but also may be eligible to enter a raffle draw. The total value of the prizes is NT$300,000, and the grand prize consists of five iPhone 15 units. For every three mobile phones recycled, an additional chance to win will be awarded. The greater the amount of recycling, the greater the odds of winning!

On August 22, 2023, the Resource Circulation Administration, Ministry of the Environment (hereinafter, “RCA”) was founded with the goals of promoting sustainable consumption and production, improving resource utilization effectiveness, and disposing of waste resources in a way that adds value. Three recycling strategies—“green design source management”, “energy and resource recycling”, and “waste momentum balance and management”—as well as two major driving forces—“connecting upstream, midstream, and downstream industries’ smooth recycling network” and “development of innovative technologies and systems”—can be used to promote waste resource recyclig, extend the service life of products, and increase raw/biological material recycling. This leads to additional carbon emission reduction benefits.

With the launch of the RCA this year (2023), collaboration has been extended to businesses. In addition to expanding recycling channels, efforts to legalize mobile phone recycling will be promoted. The “recycling rates” were devised by combining mobile phone planning, repair, and maintenance. By establishing annual goals, businesses are prompted to incorporate recycling and sustainability into the front-end design. Moreover, by repairing and selling used mobile phones, the service life of mobile phones can be prolonged, while resource access and consumption are reduced.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has held “Mobile Phone Recycling Month” annually since 2019, according to the RCA. In the same month of that year, 23,000 units were recycled, compared to 72,000 units in the same month of the previous year (2022), a nearly threefold increase. The number of mobile phones recycled that year increased to 730,000 units as a result. This year, recycling channels have been expanded to include four new business categories, including hypermarkets, electronics channels, telecommunications companies, and second-hand phones. In collaboration with Samsung Taiwan, ASUS, Sony Taiwan, Xiaomi Taiwan, vivo, HTC, Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile Co., Ltd., FETnet, FamilyMart, 7-Eleven, Shopee (iMT), Jason Communication, US3C, 3C Sheng, Smart Mobile, Carrefour, a.mart, alifemall, and NOVA, county and city environmental bureaus have assisted with recycling. In addition, the event is sponsored by Luckily International and Delta Electronics, which have approximately 13,500 locations.  During Mobile Phone Recycling Month, the goal is to recycle more than 80,000 mobile phones, reducing CO2 emissions by 11,200 tonnes annually with a carbon absorption volume equivalent to 101 Da’an Forest Parks. In addition, the recycling of metals such as gold, silver, tungsten, cobalt, and copper can be promoted, generating output worth NT$30.38 million throughout the year. In addition, in conjunction with the establishment of a resource recycling ecology this year, the theme focuses on recycling after recovery, and the month has been renamed “Mobile Phone Recycling Month”. Repair, maintenance, reuse, recycling, and re-utilization of materials are encouraged, while legalization drafts are drafted to ensure that businesses adhere to their recycling obligations.

The RCA explained that in order to recycle mobile phones, users should simply “back up data” and “reset the system (restore factory settings)” or destroy the transmission port on phones that cannot be turned on due to malfunction. Therefore, there is no cause for concern regarding the disclosure of personal information. The general public is urged to examine their damaged or unused phones on a periodic basis and hand them over to recycling channels so that resources are no longer sitting idle, thereby increasing the efficiency of recycling and reuse! The “mobile Phone Recycling Month” will last for one month, and the general public is encouraged to recycle their used mobile phones at home in order to receive preferential offers and be entered into a drawing for fantastic prizes. In November, a drawing will determine the lucky winners.
