The first cases of local dengue fever this year have appeared in both Miaoli County and Chiayi County, and the Government calls on the public to implement “patrol, dumping, cleaning, brushing”. If you have suspected symptoms, please seek medical attention as soon as possible, and the doctor shall be urged to tighten questioning of the travel and activity history of the patient.

The CDC states that the local dengue fever outbreak continues in Taiwan, such as in Miaoli and Chiayi with appering the fist cases of local dengue fever this year last week, and eight counties and cities across the country have now experienced local cases of the disease. As of August 7, there were a total of 1,109 local cases, including 920 cases in Tainan, 135 cases in Yunlin County, 38 cases in Kaohsiung, 5 cases in Chiayi County, 4 cases in Taichung, 4 cases in Pingtung County, 2 cases in Nantou County, and 1 case in Miaoli County, which is the highest number of local cases in the last 10 years. The age of the cases ranged from under 10 years old to more than 90 years old, and 41% of the cases were aged 60 years old or above (459 cases), which is higher than the percentage of cases aged 60 years old or above from 2014 to 2022 (26%). Currently, there are 9 cases of severe dengue, with sufferers ranging from 60s to 80s, including 7 cases in Yunlin County and 2 cases in Tainan, of which 3 are hospitalized, and 1 fatal case. At present, dengue viruses of types I and II have appeared in the community, so people who have been infected with dengue fever, the elderly, and the high risk groups should continue to pay attention to theirselves severe disease alert signs and symptoms of bleeding. In addition, there were 92 cases of imported dengue virus from overseas this year, and the infected sources were from Thailand (26 cases), Indonesia (17 cases), Malaysia (17 cases), Vietnam (13 cases), Philippines (6 cases), Maldives (4 cases), India (4 cases), Bangladesh (1 case), Laos (1 case), China (1 case), Myanmar (1 case), and Singapore (1 case).


CDC pointed out that the dengue fever outbreak in neighboring Southeast Asia/South Asia is on the rise, including Cambodia and Thailand continuing to experience a rise in dengue fever, Laos at a high point and higher than the same period in recent years, and cases reported throughout Indonesia, which is assessed to be on the rise. The outbreak in the Americas is continuing with more than 3.17 million cumulative cases reported, including more than 2.49 million cases reported in Brazil in South America. Peru, Bolivia and Argentina are also in critical condition.


The CDC reminds that during the summer vacation, the public has frequent travelled and the weather is hot with occasional rainfall, which is conducive to the breeding of vector mosquitoes and the spread of disease. There is a risk of dengue fever epidemic in various counties and cities, and the Government calls on the public to make sure to implement the “patrol, dumping, cleaning, brushing”, pay attention to the surroundings of the home and outside the environment whether there are places with stagnant water, and pour out the stagnant water. The water storage containers should be brushed at least once a week, and please invert or remove the containers when not in use, in order to minimize the vectors. When water containers are not in use, invert or remove them to reduce the breeding of vector mosquitoes. When engaging in outdoor activities, please wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothes and pants, and use mosquito repellents approved by the government that contain active ingredients such as DEET, Picaridin, or IR-3535 to avoid mosquito bites. If fever, headache, posterior orbital pain, muscular joint pain and other suspected symptoms of dengue fever occur, please consult a doctor as soon as possible and inform the doctor your history of travel activities. Also, please ask the doctor to inquire about the TOCC, to raise the alertness of notification, and to use the dengue fever NS1 rapid screening reagent to assist in the diagnosis in a timely manner. Please note whether the patient has any warning signs of dengue fever as well, including abdominal pain and pressure pain, persistent vomiting, mucous membrane bleeding, drowsiness and agitation, etc., and provide appropriate medical treatment.
