As international travel and cross-border migration rebounds in the post-pandemic era, there has been an increase in the number of cases in which inbound travelers have been penalized for bringing in animal produce in violation of the law. As the Dragon Boat Festival approaches, we expect the number of cases to correspondingly rise as the number of international travelers rise. To rigorously implement border quarantine measures, all units are requested to, in accordance with the authority vested upon them, strengthen relevant awareness and promote such awareness amongst migrant workers, foreign spouses, foreigners, and foreign students entering Taiwan, and also remind target subjects of the following through social networks such as the official IFI Network+ website and through LINE groups: Please comply with Taiwan’s quarantine measures and do not bring in prohibited animal or plants when entering Taiwan. Please also inform your friends and relatives abroad not to send prohibited meat products such as pork products to Taiwan by mail to avoid penalties.

If a person is found to have violated the law by bringing in pork products from a country where African swine fever (ASF) has occurred in the past three years, a fine of NT$200,000 shall be imposed on the first violation, and a fine of NT$1,000,000 shall be imposed on the second violation. If the aforementioned offender does not have permanent residency status is fined NT$200,000 and is unable to pay the fine on the spot, the Regional Office of the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan (hereinafter referred to as the BAPHIQ), will refer the offender to the National Immigration Agency and the offender may be refused entry.

If the recipient of imported pork products from a country where ASF has occurred is found to be the recipient (importer), a fine of NT$200,000 shall be imposed for the first instance, and a fine of NT$1,000,000 shall be imposed for the second instance and thereinafter.
