Love Yourself! - 5 Main Contraception Methods

‘Contraception’ means ‘to avoid becoming pregnant’. In other words, it means to intervene in the natural process of conception or to terminate a pregnancy. The underlying mechanisms behind most methods of contraception can be summarized as:

1. Preventing ovulation.

2. Preventing sperm from fertilizing an egg.

3. Preventing zygote implantation.

Based on these three mechanisms, the Health Promotion Administration of the Ministry of Health and Welfare has summarized 5 main contraception methods:

1. Birth Control Pills: 100% effective at stopping pregnancy when administered correctly.

2. Condoms: Readily available.

3. IUDs: Implanted by a medical practitioner; effective for 3-5 years.

4. Birth Control Patches: Convenient, but unavailable to people with certain illnesses.

5. Emergency Contraceptive Pills: An emergency remedy only, not recommended as a regular contraception method.
