The government aims to help immigrants adapt to living in Taiwan more smoothly and use vehicles for commute or everyday purposes. In accordance with the reciprocity principle under Article 50 of Road Traffic Safety Regulations, resident aliens or immigrants who are granted stay or residency for 1 year (or longer) may apply to exchange their foreign driver’s license for a Taiwanese one. Such application must be filed within 1 year starting the next day of arriving Taiwan by presenting the license issued by a reciprocating country/region.

Under the principle of reciprocity, Taiwan citizens may exchange a Taiwan motorcycle/motorcar license for foreign driver’s license in a certain country; the same also applies to the people of the said country in Taiwan. For information about reciprocating countries please refer to the “Current international regulations regarding the validity and transferability of Taiwan’s international driver’s permit and/or Taiwan’s domestic driver’s license” as listed on the website of Directorate General of Highways, MOTC.
