What are the ways to deal with a crying baby?

In the first few months, giving a prompt and appropriate response to the crying will not spoil your baby. You can first check if the baby is hungry, too hot, too cold, or needs a diaper change. If none of these apply, you can wait about ten seconds to see if he or she starts to self-soothe; if not, you may soothe.

Ways to Deal with a Crying Baby

●Let the baby see your face

●Talk to the baby in stable and mild tones

●Put your hand on the baby’s stomach

●Cross the baby’s arms over his or her chest

●Wrap the baby up comfortably

●Pick up the baby

●Rock the baby gently

If none of these work, you can try breastfeeding. While breastfeeding, pay attention to how the baby is positioned to make sure he or she is drinking the milk. Let the baby continue sucking one breast at a time until he or she lets go. This will ensure the baby gets enough hindmilk. Change to the other breast next time you breastfeed.

It is best to soothe a baby with repetitive sounds or actions. You can try the following:

1. Hold the baby upright in front of your chest and keep his or her head against the your throat. Rock the baby gently while speaking softly (this is especially effective if the father does it).

2. Put the baby face down with his or her body on the adult’s arm, with the baby’s stomach gently pressed.

3. Put the baby in the same position used in Method 2, but this time on the lap of a sitting adult. The adult should then gently massage the baby’s back or gently pat the baby’s buttocks.

Cut Down on Coffee and Tea Consumption and Refrain from Smoking

Reduce the intake of coffee, tea or other caffeinated beverages (like Coke). If the mom must smoke, it is suggested to smoke less and smoke after instead of before or during breastfeeding. Ask the family members not to smoke in the room where the baby is.

Try Quitting Milk

You can try quitting milk, other dairy products or other food allergens (beans, peanuts, eggs) as this may help. You should try quitting these kinds of food for a week first and keep doing it if the baby really starts to cry less. If the baby still cries a lot like before, then the food is not the cause. Sometimes, the baby will be easier to soothe when he is held by another person for there will be no smell of breast milk.
