According to the data published by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS), the rate of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection for newborns can be drastically reduced from 45% to 2% through measures such as preventive medication, appropriate delivery method and using substitutes for breast milk. We have launched the HIV screening program for pregnant women since 2005 to prevent vertical transmission of HIV. The program covers free HIV tests along with prenatal checkups for pregnant women (including foreign spouses) in Taiwan. We hope to prevent vertical transmission of HIV through consecutive monitoring and evaluation during pregnancy, as well as medication before and after birth.
