The temperature has been extremely high for the past few summers, and the weather has been very humid. According to the Weather Bureau, temperatures will remain extremely high for the following week. Due to Taiwan's tropical climate, these high temperatures are usually accompanied by high levels of humidity. Please beware of the heat when involved in outdoor activities, and pay attention to the three tips provided by the Health Promotion Administration: 'Stay cool, get plenty of water, and stay alert'. For outdoor workers such as construction workers, fishermen, farmers, and athletes, please remember to use sunblock and beware of dehydration.

1. Lower the workplace temperature and provide a cool environment during break times to prevent workers' body temperatures from rising.

2. Provide suitable drinks such as water at a temperature of 10-15ºC, energy drinks, or salted cold water.

3. Adjust work times to avoid employees working at or around noon.

4. Exercise health management. Workers with high blood pressure, heart diseases, liver diseases, Peptic Ulcer Disease, Endocrine Disorders, Anhidrosis, and kidney diseases should follow doctors' advice and avoid working in high temperature environments. Employers must stay alert with regard to their workers’ health conditions both before and during hours of operation, and must take appropriate steps to safeguard employees' health.

5. Educate workers on how to prevent heat-related illnesses.

6. Establish an emergency report and handling system.

The Health Promotion Administration would like to remind you that if you begin to feel any of the symptoms of heat-related illnesses, such as an increase in body temperature, skin becoming dry and red, rapid heart rate, or in worse cases, the inability to sweat, headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, disorientation, cramping, or fainting spells, please leave the environment immediately and try to lower the body temperature (e.g. by removing items of clothing, wiping the body with water, or using a fan), drink salted cold water or a diluted electrolyte drink and go to the hospital as soon as possible.
