Cultivate South Asia Languages Tour Guide Professionals to Develop New South Tourism Market

1.With high school or vocational high school equivalent education, you can apply “Junior Qualification Examination for Professional and Technical Personnel: Tourist Guides and Tourist Leaders”

Applicants with high school or vocational high school education (or above) and have certificate of degree are qualified to apply the examination (Applicants who applied with foreign degree should attach the original certificate of degree or other certification documents, and the copy and Chinese translation verified by Overseas Missions or Chinese translation verified by domestic notary public).

Tourist guides mainly provide service for foreigners, help them visit Taiwan and get familiar with attractions and customs in Taiwan; in contrast, tourist leaders bring Taiwanese to travel abroad and are responsible for caring members and handling immigration affairs. Tourist guides and tourist leader examinations can be divided into two types “Foreign Language” and “Chinese Language”, i.e. the examination can be divided into four types “Foreign Language Tourist Guides”, “Foreign Language Tourist Leaders”, “Chinese Language Tourist Guides” and “Chinese Language Tourist Leaders”. Application of examination start at December of each year and take written test at March of the next year. Except for Foreign Language Tourist Guides examination need to take oral test additionally, Chinese Language Tourist Guides and Tourist Leaders only need written test.

2. Successfully pass Ministry of Examination “Tourist Guides and Tourist Leaders Test”, and attend orientation training of Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications to get certificate of completion and then apply to get certificate of practice.

After successfully passed the examination and get the certification of qualification, before actually lead tourists, it is required to attend orientation training of Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications held annually and pass the graduation test to get the license. If there is no immediate demand to lead tourists, you will not need to attend the training in that year because the certification of qualification don’t have a validity period and is valid permanently. But if you don’t lead any group in three consecutive years after getting the license, you need to attend orientation training again.

Orientation training of tourist guides and tourist leaders is held by Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications that is available in the whole year and is classified by day classes and night classes. Please refer to Tourist Guide Association, R.O.C., Tourist Leader Association, R.O.C., and Chaoyang University of Technology official website for the schedule of 2017 orientation training schedule.

3. Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications hold “Training Class of Rare Language Tourist Guide License Test” annually to help new immigrants pass the tourist guides examination.

Tourist guides should have senior high school education and should pass “Junior Qualification Examination for Professional and Technical Personnel: Tourist Guides and Tourist Leaders” held by Ministry of Examination in advance to run tourist guide business, and Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications will hold “Training Class of Rare Language Tourist Guide License Test” from September to November in each year and fully subsidize the cost of the training course, helping people to pass the tourism guides examination.

4. Attend to rare language tourist guide training and help foreign language tourist guides for translation and tour guide.

New immigrants has language advantages and with the training of tourism and travel relevant domain knowledge and narrative skills, they can help foreign language tourist guides for translation and tour guide, and cover the current gap of South Asia languages tour guides.

5. Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications establishes “Tourism Competency E-learning” website and provide various digital learning courses.

Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications aim to encourage the self-training of tourism professionals, enhance service quality and relevant practical knowledge, and thus established Tourism Competency E-learning” digital training platform (https://elearning.taiwan.net.tw) for the enhancement of professional competency from digital courses provided by the platform, such as tourism industry service practice, creative marketing practice, orientation training, case study, etc.

In recent years, the government is actively promoting new south tourism policy through convenient measures such as visa-free trial for various South Asia countries and give visa to group tourists to attract many South Asian tourists for visiting Taiwan. With the boost of tourism market and insufficient tourist guide labor, the government encourages new immigrants to participate in the tourism industry, and get the tourist guide certification through their own language advantages and training support, to provide new immigrants with another career opportunity.
